How long are we going to continue to teach women what to fear in their world?

I speak from my own perspective and from that of the hundreds of women I’ve been lucky enough to know - friends, family, colleagues, clients, coaches, mentors, and more.
Of all the human emotional needs and desires - love, fear, acceptance, belonging - one stands above the rest: safety.
We all want to feel safe.
Safe to share our thoughts.
Safe to express our feelings.
Safe to show our hopes.
Safe to be vulnerable and silly and uncertain.
Safe to be proud and outrageous and loud.
Safe to be soft and quiet and scared.
Safe to be all of those things without fear of judgment.

And yet, we live in a world where we are taught - conditioned - to be afraid.
We are told to check under restroom stalls, to carry mace, to never go anywhere alone.
To pretend to be on the phone - or actually be on the phone.
To share our location with multiple people.
To text when we arrive, to text when we get home.
To be careful what we wear.
To be careful what we say.
To be careful where we set down our drinks.
To not drink too much.
To not be too nice.
To not be too mean.
To not be too quiet.
To not be too loud.
To lock the doors. To get a dog. To get a roommate. To get a boyfriend.
To avoid eye contact. To know the secret bartender codes for getting home safely. To call an Uber but also to not trust Ubers.
To not stay out too late.
To not go out too early.
To be afraid.
All the time. Of everyone.
Oh, and to make sure we teach this to our daughters. Not our sons - just our daughters.
It sucks. All of it sucks.
But here’s the truth: Safety isn’t just about avoiding danger. It’s about understanding the world we live in, learning how to navigate it with awareness, and knowing we have the right to exist freely and confidently.
Coaching can help women redefine safety - not as constant fear, but as knowledge, strength, and self-trust. It’s about learning how to set boundaries, recognize red flags, and develop the confidence to move through the world on our own terms.
We deserve to feel safe - not just because we’ve mastered every precaution, but because we understand the rules, the norms, and most importantly, our own power.
